The Most Dangerous Intersections in Birmingham, Alabama

Share this post:

Birmingham isn’t known for its easy driving conditions. Many Alabama residents immediately think of high traffic volume, speeding, and confusing signs when they think of Birmingham, which make this city especially difficult to drive in. Unfortunately, that means that crashes are a regular sight for many residents and visitors to the city.

Intersections can be a major issue with high-traffic areas, and Birmingham is no exception there. The city is home to some of the most dangerous intersections in America, so a crash could happen to anyone traveling through the city. As such, be sure to watch for the intersections below as you make your drive through the Magic City.

University Boulevard and 28th Street

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently released data about highways around the U.S. and where the most dangerous intersections fall. Unfortunately, one of the most dangerous intersections is just outside St. Vincent’s Hospital.

This intersection is so dangerous because of the heavy traffic and lack of safety precautions. At one of Birmingham’s major hospitals, this intersection sees plenty of traffic throughout the day, without safety measures to protect pedestrians. While the city is taking steps to make intersections like these safer, like adding more crosswalks and repairing unsafe sidewalks and roads, some intersections are still risky.

Five Points South

Known for its Storyteller fountain, Five Points South is one intersection that is likely to confuse visitors and cause plenty of trouble on the road. Five Points isn’t just a pedestrian-heavy area, with its shops to visit and sights to see. It’s also the intersection of three roads.

Magnolia Avenue, 11th Avenue South, and 20th Street South all intersect here, which can be nerve-wracking, especially to those unfamiliar with the area. If you’re passing through the area, keep an eye on the traffic. You could be injured by a driver making a wrong turn in this complex intersection.

Malfunction Junction

While the nickname “Malfunction Junction” generally refers to a certain stretch of Interstate 65, many Alabama residents think of the intersection of Interstates 20 and 65 when they hear it. This intersection is especially dangerous because it’s so complex.

To exit I-20 and enter I-65, you’ll need to be on the correct side of the road, which branches left to head north and right to head south. This leads to quick lane changes, missed exits, and frequent accidents. When you include rush-hour traffic, the results could be disastrous.

As such, accidents on the interstate account for many of the nearly 17,000 intersection-related accidents in Jefferson County. When dealing with this major intersection, take care to follow the signs and watch for drivers around you who may not be familiar with the intersection.
